Sheree Cooks is a Tacoma native and proud mother of three children and a new grandmother. Her career working with children, families, and communities spans over 20 years and she holds a degree in Early Childhood Education. She has held various positions involving youth and families from a Nature Preschool teacher, Family Engagement Coordinator, and Program Manager for an afterschool program. She staunchly believes in equity in education and social equity for BIPOC communities. Sheree has always had a passion for serving her community and has led many projects on the Eastside of Tacoma where she has been a resident for many years. She developed a project to connect families to the Eastside’s natural greenspaces through literacy and nature walks to engage more BIPOC in her area.
Sheree was one of the first Black City PTA council Presidents and Regional Family Engagement Chair for two years. She also led a parent advisory committee with parents from throughout the Tacoma Public School District to rewrite the Title 1 Parent Engagement Policy to ensure that it was equitable for all families and had the parents’ voice for which it was designed to support. She works at the Tacoma Urban League advancing education equity and excellence through supporting, promoting, and advocating authentic family-school-community partnerships with the city’s Black community in different ways.
Sheree has admired the many services CIS provides to support students and families and is excited to be a part of the CIS family!
