The Ready, Set, Read-Tacoma! Summer 2017 program was a huge success! After four weeks of reading, learning, and fun hands-on activities, the summer programs at Mann, Jefferson, Northeast Tacoma, and Stafford Elementary Schools have come to a close. Children enrolled in the program attended twice-weekly story times with related fun activities to reinforce their learning and get them interacting with the material. This summer we had 92 children enrolled in the summer program, along with their siblings, parents, and guardians who joined in on the fun.
Tobias and Lineas’ mom said, “they love the make-and-take activities… it has given their summer some much-needed structure” while Chloe’s mom told us that she didn’t miss a single day in the summer program, adding “I love this program, it gave my daughter something to do this summer [and] helped her to become much more social.”
Thank you to our partners, without them this program would not have been possible:
- Tacoma Public Schools and Graduate Tacoma for their financial support
- Teaching Toys and Books for providing some of our hands-on activity and art supplies
- Hello Cupcake for donating cupcakes to our end-of-summer celebration
- Our volunteers, who collectively gave 109 hours of time
Thanks to the support of the community and caring adults, 92 children have spent the summer learning, reading, and having fun!
Teacher Librarian Margaret leads the children in an activity to go with the book In The Small, Small Pond at Stafford Elementary.
Children received books in a book giveaway at the end of the summer at Jefferson Elementary.
Teacher Librarian Debbie and volunteer Fayth showed off their train conductor skills at Mann Elementary.
Chloe didn’t miss a day of the summer program! Here she is with her mom and Stafford Principal Shannan Graves.
