The Communities In School Program was recently recognized on a national level to improve education outcomes. Child Trends, a national research non-profit, released a new report affirming the effectiveness and cost efficiency of integrated student supports (ISS) programs.

Key findings from Child Trends’ latest report, Integrated Student Supports: The Evidence (childtrends.org/issreport) include:

• ISS programs increase math achievement and student attendance and lower dropout rates;
• Student-centric programs that focus on all aspects of students’ needs, both academic and non-academic, are more likely to be successful than ones that focus on single factors in isolation;
• ISS programs are cost effective and yield a positive return on investment; and,
• High-quality implementation is key to the effectiveness of these programs, while low-quality or partial implementation shows lower or no difference at all in effectiveness.

At Communities In Schools of Tacoma we utilize our Site-Coordinators to provide the support on all aspects of students’ needs. We connect our students and their families to critical community resources. Whether it is our Weekend Backpack Food Program, Shoes That Fit, Mentoring, or any of our other programs; CIS of Tacoma helps Tacoma students succeed. By partnering with businesses in our community and connecting with local volunteers, we have proven to both increase graduation rates and reduce dropout rates.
