On a gray Wednesday morning, current and former students from Baker Middle School and Oakland High School, a parent/volunteer at Fern Hill Elementary along with Communities In Schools staff and board members traveled to Olympia to attend the Annual Legislative Luncheon.  The purpose of the luncheon is to provide Communities In Schools from around the state the opportunity to share our stories and outcomes with their District State Representatives and Senators to appeal for future funding.  Communities In Schools is requesting $5 million for the 2015-17 biennium to expand services to 60,000 additional students, focusing on struggling schools and supporting students with potential high risk of school failure including those in poverty and students of color.

Communities In Schools of Tacoma shined as students shared there personal stories and accomplishments among the group and brought many of us to tears.  Everyone learned something that day and after lunch, students toured the different buildings visiting the State Supreme Court, Law Library and various offices including the office of the Governor with free ice cream bars in the Rotunda!

Thank you to Representatives Steve Kirby, Laurie Jinkins, David Sawyer and Senator Steve Conway for taking the time to talk with all of us and spending the extra time with our students.
