Communities In Schools of Tacoma

We have so much to share for the month of April! Spring has sprung through our school sites and students are loaded with energy and enthusiasm about all the programs we have in place.

Sherman highlight AudreyAudrey Hutton is a 2nd grade student at Sherman.  She has participated in Hip Hop, and Art with CIS as well as the reading program.  Audrey began reading this year with a DRA score of 8 and has worked with a tutor throughout the year and raised her score to an 18!  Not only has she become more confident in herself, but her behavior has improved in the enrichment programs as well.  She is on her way to ending the year at reading level!

Easter at Baker was a huge success! Along with 2,000 guests, Life Center Baker, Lindquist Dental, YWCA, College Success Foundation, and Ready, Set, Read all contributed to make this event an incredible experience. Visitors enjoyed the egg hunt, with 25,300 Easter eggs and we received great feedback regarding the carnival games, inflatables, food and giveaways. We are so thankful for the partnerships that have impacted the students and community of Baker Middle School.

Steve Kirby

Representative Steve Kirby, a Mt. Tahoma Alumni, visited the high school to speak with students about the legislative process. Several of CIS students were in attendence and felt like Steve really invested in them personally. The Apex Learning program at Mt. Tahoma is currently serving 50 students with over on the waiting list. This program has proven to be very successful in equipping students with credits to graduate. Excitement is in the air as graduation approaches for students who never thought it could be a possibility.
