Families in need

For many of our children, the winter holidays are especially challenging. Every year, there are students in the Tacoma School District whose holiday season won’t be as bright as their fellow students. Last year out of all the students we served, 169 were homeless or housing insecure and over 80% were eligible for free or reduced lunch. For these students and their families, ensuring their basic needs are met is a daily struggle. This year our Winter Wish Program is targeting students who are experiencing hardship or homelessness. Our goal is to provide warm clothing (pajamas, coats, blankets, etc.) for these students in need this holiday season.

Winter Wishes

Since 2011, Communities In Schools of Tacoma has worked within the Tacoma School District to identify students in need of extra support during the winter holidays. Students are nominated for the program by their peers, teachers, counselors, or our own on-site staff. They let Communities In Schools know how we can make their season bright–whether that means a holiday meal, a blanket, or warm clothing to get through the winter–and we get to work matching them with a donor.

Celebration

After all the students have been matched with their donors, we plan a big celebration! Students and their families are invited to enjoy some festive treats, receive their gifts, and celebrate the season–even Santa makes an appearance!
