Seasonal Part-Time Math Tutor (January-May)

Job Description: Communities In Schools of Tacoma seeks an math tutor to work with students at Gray Middle School. The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively and work with students at different skill levels, work independently, and have excellent reliability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Meet with 10 students weekly to discuss and review math coursework

·         Offer encouragement and support to keep students motivated in completing their math coursework

·         Use a variety of methods and tools to convey mathematical concepts, processes, and skills in accordance with Tacoma Public Schools curriculum

·         Assess students on their progress

·         Maintain clear and frequent communication with CIS Site Coordinator to ensure reliable delivery of services

 

Required Education and/or Qualifications:

·         Proficient math concepts and skills including algebra, geometry, and basic arithmetic

·         Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with students of different backgrounds and skill levels; experience working with at-risk populations a plus

·         Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to communicate complex ideas in different ways for different students

·         Previous experience as a tutor (either paid or volunteer) a plus

 

Other Requirements:

·         Must be at least 18 years old

·         Have transportation and valid driver’s license

·         Able to pass a Washington State Patrol background check

·         Flexible schedule

 

Training & Supervision:

·         Attend orientation and training

·         Training and supervision conducted by Director of Strategic Impact Initiatives

 

Time Commitment:

·         8-10 hours per week

·         Seasonal, January – May 2019

·         Work will be done after school hours, M-F 2:45pm-4:30pm
