SUMMARY:Advocacy Day
DESCRIPTION:Come show your support for Communities In Schools! \nOlympia will be opening its doors (hypothetically) for the state’s non-profits to talk to legislators about what they do.  This is a big deal\, since  promotes what Communities In Schools does.  Without advocacy like this\, running a non-profit becomes much\, much harder. \nAs the name would suggest\, Communities In Schools looks to the community as a whole to support students.

SUMMARY:Oral Health Drive
DESCRIPTION:Just $5.00 will provide a toothbrush\, toothpaste\, floss\, and a book. \nResearch shows that elementary\, middle\, and high school students with poor oral health and dental pain is the leading cause of school absenteeism in the nation. It also shows Tacoma children from low-income families are impacted four times more because of limited access to dental care\, insurance\, transportation\, and other barriers. \nA partnership with the Pierce County Dental Society\, Tacoma Public Schools\, South Tacoma Rotary Club and Communities In Schools of Tacoma would educate students and their families about the importance of good oral health to inner city of Tacoma children. Providing children and their families with education on the importance of exams\, cleanings\, and fluoride treatment will lead to a healthy start and healthy future. \n \nWe will begin with an oral health drive during January 2014 with a goal of collecting 3\,000 products to be distributed to low income students in schools across Tacoma during the month of February 2014. \nJust $5.00 will provide a toothbrush\, toothpaste\, floss\, and a book on the importance of good dental care to a student who needs it. You can also help by donating toothbrushes\, floss\, or toothpaste. \n  \n\nPhoto credit: kkinjo\, via flickr

SUMMARY:First Responders Day
DESCRIPTION:First Responders Day is a state-wide initiative to honor those who are the first to respond to emergencies.  First Responders include people like police and firefighters\, but as the National First Responders Organization points out\, “a First Responder is any individual who runs toward an event rather than away” (their more comprehensive list can be found here). \nHere at Communities In Schools of Tacoma\, we believe in recognizing the people on our community who make a difference (we also acknowledge that means recognizing everyone). \nEvery year\, each of our school sites adopts a fire or police station nearby.  The students make thank you cards\, and then deliver them–along with cookies and coffee\, donated by local businesses–to their adopted station.

SUMMARY:Are you wearing you golfer's socks?
DESCRIPTION:You know\, the pair with a hole in one. \nOn Friday\, July 19th\, the Tacoma Professional Firefighters Local #31 and the WA State Council of Firefighters bring you \nThe 16th Annual Jimmy Cason Memorial Golf Tournament! \nThe general\, yet wildly necessary information: \n-Friday\, July 19th 2013 \n-0900 Shotgun Start\, 4 person scramble \n-Meadow Park Golf Course \n-Registration includes 18 holes\, a cart\, lunch\, and ragne balls \nThe Jimmy Cason Memorial Golf Tournament began in 1998\, a year after the Tacoma Fire Department and the Washington State Council of Firefighters lost one of their most hard working and passionate brothers\, Jimmy Cason. Jimmy was respected by many\, and through his tireless work and charitable fundraising\, he made our community a better place. This tournament was started so that we could remember Jimmy and carry on his dedication to helping others. \n2013 marks the 16th year we (the Firefighters) have held this golf tournament and we are pleased to support Communities in Schools of Tacoma with the proceeds. For more information\, please call 253.221.3131.

SUMMARY:Annual Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Communities In Schools of Tacoma \nAnnual Luncheon \nWednesday\, June 5th \nWe would like to give a resounding thank you to all of the people who made this year’s luncheon such a success! \nThanks to generous community members and businesses (not to mention the hard work of our planning committee)\, we were able to raise over $50\,000\, making it our best luncheon ever! \nConsidering that and that the worst thing that happened was two deflated balloons\, we’re chalking this one up in the “win” column. (And we were pretty inspired when it came to solving that problem!) \n \nYou can head over to our facebook page to see some photos from the event.
